Résider 5 semaines à Philadelphie et ne pas profiter d’un dimanche pour flâner à NY relève de la bêtise. Donc pour éviter le qualificatif, en ce week-end suivant le marathon, avec MaryAnn, nous sommes partis pour Manhattan et le MoMa. Départ vers 8:30, 200 km à couvrir, trafic fluide, le rêve. Si en semaine parquer une auto à Manhattan relève du cauchemar financier, non seulement le dimanche, on trouve des places pour se garer et cerise sur la Pizza, c’est gratuit.
Living 5 weeks in Philadelphia and not taking advantage of a Sunday to stroll in NY is nonsense. So to avoid the qualifier, this weekend after the marathon that took place the previous week, with MaryAnn, we left for Manhattan and MoMa. Departure around 8:30, +/- 120 miles to cover, smooth traffic, the dream. If on weekdays parking a car in Manhattan is a financial nightmare, not only on Sundays, there are parking spaces and Cherry on the Pizza, Cake or Pie, it’s free.
Donc le but initial de la visite et le Musée d’Art Moderne de NY, pour faire simple, le MoMa. Cette visite est mon quatrième pèlerinage dans ces lieux. Certes les collections de tableaux sont superbes même si cette fois je n’ai pu trouver Gernica. En fait ce qui m’attirait dans ce Musée, c’était la mise en valeur de l’esthétique industrielle, des mobiliers inventifs tels ceux de Le Corbusier ou Raymond Loewy. Et bien pour cette visite, en ce qui concerne le Design Industriel, nada, zilch, nichts, rien ou presque. Désolation. Vrai Picasso, Miro, Monet, Matisse et autres géants sont présents, mais le Musée n’offre plus vraiment de fil conducteur, les œuvres sont groupées par collections de donateurs. Mais les séquences sont sans âme, au moins la Fondation Barnes à Philadelphie, par sa densité et son déploiement, offre au visiteur une narration qui se perd au MoMa.
Déception.
So the initial purpose of the visit and the Museum of Modern Art of NY, to put it simply, the MoMa. This visit is my fourth pilgrimage to these places. Certainly the collections of paintings are superb even if this time I could not find Gernica. In fact what attracted me to this Museum was the enhancement of industrial aesthetics, inventive furniture such as those of Le Corbusier or Raymond Loewy. Well for this visit, regarding Industrial Design, nada, zilch, nichts, nothing or almost. Desolation. True Picasso, Miro, Monet, Matisse and other giants are present, but the Museum no longer really offers a common thread, the works are grouped by collections of donors. But the sequences are soulless, at least the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, by its density and its deployment, offers the visitor a narration that gets lost at MoMa.
Disappointment.

Pour nous réconforter, avec MaryAnn, nous nous sommes rendus chez Katz pour une petite collation.
Comme d’habitude, si l’établissement affiche une occupation à faire pâlir un patron de bistro parisien, la taille des portions donnera une crise d’apoplexie au Thénardier.
To comfort us, with MaryAnn, we went to Katz for a small snack.
As usual, if the establishment displays an occupancy more than desirable to a Parisian bistro owner, the size of the portions will give a stroke to the accountant and the owner of the Bistro.
Non MaryAnn ne sollicite pas une quelconque aide divine pour venir à bout de sa commande. Elle réfléchit comment ingurgiter la première moitié de son sandwich, car elle sait, et moi aussi, que nous demanderons de quoi ramener l’autre moitié à la maison.
No MaryAnn does not seek any divine help to eat and digest her order. She’s thinking about how to swallow the first half of her sandwich. She knows, and so do I, that we’re going to ask what to take the other half home.
