Avec Susan qui m’avait rejoint en France, fin mai, dès avant l’ouverture des frontières françaises aux citoyens US, nous avions prévu de retourner ensemble en Floride le 21 août. Certes les frontières US n’étaient pas encore ouvertes aux européens, mais nous avions la conviction que pour notre voyage de retour ce serait chose faite. A moins de trois semaines de la date prévue, les frontières US me restent fermées, même si je suis vacciné. L’article suivant montre qu’il existe des solutions. Ces solutions m’avaient été décrites par l’ami Claude, Air France me confirme leur validité.

En gros, si l’accès direct aux US est interdit aux européens, il est ouvert aux résidents de nombreux pays, dont le Mexique, si ceux-ci y ont passé au moins 15 jours. Cette niche épidémiologique s’applique aussi aux européens.

Éclairage de la niche

  1. Prendre un billet Paris-Mexique.
    Aucune formalité d’entrée n’est exigée, ni vaccination ni test PCR.
  2. Réserver dans un hôtel sympa, un séjour de deux semaines.
  3. Rentrer aux US via le Mexique par un vol normal.
    Il me reste à vérifier si un test PCR récent est requis.

Exploitation de la niche

Puisque l’entrée directe aux US reste, pour le moment interdite, j’ai modifié mon billet Paris-Miami en Paris-Cancun, station balnéaire qui hébergea, c’est son titre de gloire, une conférence Nord-Sud sous l’égide de François Mitterrand en octobre 1981. Via un site de réservation, je me suis trouvé une résidence confortable, non loin de la plage, pour une quinzaine de nuits. Restait à trouver un vol Cancun-Floride, c’est chose faite.

Alors que je m’étais promis de ne jamais mettre les pieds au Mexique, la COVID me l’impose. On aura vu de pires contraintes pour contourner le mur de la connerie, mais cela reste un contournement et une connerie. Deux objets que je manie avec des pincettes. Susan m’avait rejoint en France en avançant masquée derrière la fiction des fiançailles, pour l’entrée aux US, cette fiction m’était interdite. Croisons les doigts pour que le couperet d’une soudaine modification des règles ne détruise le fragile montage pour rejoindre Susan.

With Susan who had joined me in France at the end of May, way before the opening of the French borders to US citizens, we had planned to return together to Florida on August 21. Of course the US borders were not yet open to Europeans, but we were convinced that for our return trip it would be done. Less than three weeks from the scheduled return date, the US borders remain closed to me (dangerous Europeans) even if I am vaccinated. The following article shows that there are solutions. These solutions were described to me by my friend Claude, Air France confirms their validity.

In short, if direct access to the US is prohibited to Europeans, it is open to residents of many countries, including Mexico, if they have spent at least 15 days there. This epidemiological loophole also applies to Europeans.

Lighting of the loophole

  1. Get a Paris-Mexico ticket.
    No entry formalities are required, neither vaccination nor PCR test.
  2. Book a nice hotel, a two-week stay.
  3. Return to the US via Mexico on a normal flight.
    I still need to check if a recent PCR test is required.

Exploitation of the loophole

Since direct entry to the US remains, for the moment forbidden, I modified my ticket Paris-Miami to a Paris-Cancun, a seaside resort which hosted, is its title of glory, a North-South conference under the aegis of François Mitterrand in October 1981. Via a booking site, I found a comfortable resort, not far from the beach, for fifteen nights. The final touch is to find a flight from Cancun to Florida. Done.

While I promised myself that I would never set foot in Mexico, COVID imposed this no-no visit on me. I have seen worse constraints to circumvent the wall of bullshit, but it remains a circumvention and a wall of bullshit. Susan had joined me in France by advancing masked behind the fiction of the engagement with her Fiance. For the entry in the US, this fiction was not available to me. Let’s cross our fingers so that the guillotine of a sudden rule change doesn’t destroy the fragile assembly to reunite with Susan in Florida.
