Il y a fort longtemps, une bande Geeks avait créé une application de communication, simple d’emploi, aux nombreuses fonctionnalités, SKYPE. Cette application fut vendue à eBay qui espérait optimiser sa position dominante de place de marché. eBay n’obtenant pas les résultats escomptés, l’application fut vendue à Microsoft.
A long time ago, a group of geeks created a communication application, easy to use, with many features, SKYPE. This application was sold to eBay which hoped to optimize its dominant market place position. eBay not getting the expected results, the application was sold to MicroSoft.
Afin de doter SKYPE d’une fonction qui pouvait rendre l’application quasi universelle, Microsoft ajouta la possibilité d’acheter un numéro de téléphonie classique localisé dans le pays de votre choix. A titre personnel, j’avais acheté un numéro de téléphone localisé en Floride. Quand on connait le prix d’un appel USA vers un portable France, l’utilité est évidente. Comme SKYPE permettait le transfert d’appel du numéro US vers mon portable pour un coût très raisonnable, mes correspondants US pouvaient me joindre sans casser leur tirelire. Pendant une dizaine d’années j’ai payé sans hésiter les quelques 70€ annuels d’abonnement à ce service.

Personally, I had bought a phone number located in Florida. When we know the price of a USA call to a France mobile phone, the usefulness is obvious. As SKYPE allowed the call transfer from the US number to my mobile for a very reasonable cost, my US correspondents could reach me without breaking their piggy bank. For about ten years I paid without hesitation the approximately €70 annual subscription to this service.
Si l’idée initiale était bonne, l’arrivée de WhatsApp qui offre des fonctions similaires et gratuites en utilisant le numéro de portable comme identifiant, la concurrence aura contraint Microsoft à fermer ce service et à focaliser leurs efforts vers de domaines plus porteurs, l’Intelligence Artificielle, l’I.A. en particulier.
If the initial idea was good, the arrival of WhatsApp which offers similar and free functions using the mobile number as an identifier, competition would have forced Microsoft to close this service and focus their efforts on more promising areas, Artificial Intelligence, the AI in particular.
Comme nous devrions tous le savoir, l’I.A. fluidifie, fiabilise, optimise les tout ce qui touche à l’activité humaine et Microsoft se positionne comme l’un des acteurs majeurs de la diffusion de l’I.A., du moins pour les autres.
Bien qu’ayant fermé définitivement SKYPE le 5 mai 2025, j’ai reçu de Microsoft en date du 19 octobre 2025, soit plus de 6 mois après la fermeture du service, le message suivant :
As we should all know, AI fluidifies, makes reliable, optimizes everything related to human activity and Microsoft positions itself as one of the major players in the dissemination of AI, at least for others.
Although having permanently closed SKYPE on May 5, 2025, I received from Microsoft on October 19, 2025, more than 6 months after the service was closed, the following message:
Tout me porte à croire que si le Nouveau Testament affirme, et perso j’en doute, que Jésus a ressuscité après sa crucifixion, j’ai la quasi-certitude que SKYPE ne suivra pas le même chemin, je ne pourrais donc pas récupérer les 0,68 USD.
For my English language readers, the mail informs me that in order to keep my credit, I have to connect to the now deceased SKYPE. If the New Testament affirms that, after his death, Jesus resuscitated, I have a strong belief that SKYPE will not follow the same path.
Comme quoi, si en matière d’I.A., Microsoft prêche la bonne parole, avec l’enterrement de SKYPE, Microsoft aura utilisé un vieil outil, la S.N. (Stupidité Naturelle).

In other words, if in terms of AI, Microsoft preaches the good word, with the processing of SKYPE burial, Microsoft will have used an old tool, the SN (Natural Stupidity).
